Responding to Nepal….

Life is short, and mission is urgent.

Two weeks ago, a devastating earthquake struck Nepal killing over 8,000 people. Yesterday, another 7.3 quake struck the region again resulting in at least another 68 deaths.

David Platt recorded a powerful message on A Christ-Compelled Response to Nepal. You can listen to it here...http://www.radical.net/media/series/view/2490/a-christ-compelled-response-to-nepal?filter=series

We are encouraged to pray more fervently, give more sacrificially, and go more urgently to the peoples of Nepal.

Many of you are wondering what you can do. Here are some organizations you can support who have been and will continue to work in Nepal.

1.  Asia’s Hope:  Asia’s Hope is a multi-denominational, grassroots movement working in Cambodia, Thailand, and India to provide quality long-term care for orphaned children at high risk of sexual and economic exploitation.  A fellow Acts 29 pastor has worked with this group in Asia, and I am hoping to go in 2016.

2.   Mountain Child:  Mountain Child exists to empower Himalayan children with the skills to become carriers of hope to their people.

3.  International Mission Board: The IMB has one goal - bringing the Gospel of Jesus Christ to unreached people in the world. They have been working in Nepal too.

Grateful for Compassionate and Generous People

I recently received an email from friends in the Dominican Republic. It contained pictures of a restroom project we began in February of 2015. I would like to share them with you here. The project was made possible through the compassion and generosity of people who wanted to make a difference among the poor.

The church I pastor (Advance Community Church in Gibsonia, PA) is actively involved in helping plant a church in a village where close to 80 families lived without running water and without restrooms. They now have running water and several restrooms.

"The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has appointed me to bring good news to the poor..." Isaiah 61:1, Luke 4:18

3 Ways to Grow this Good Friday

Good Friday is a great day for spiritual growth. Jesus Christ suffered the wrath of sin for the salvation of all who believe. He did this out of love for His Father and love for the sinful world - including you and me

The church I pastor is called Advance Community Church. We are not gathering for a Good Friday service this year. Instead, it is our desire for people to do these 3 things throughout the course of the day - individually or as a family.

Meditate
     a) Reflect on the following Scriptures:
          Isaiah 53:3-6, John 3:16-21Romans 5:6-10, 1 Corinthians 1:18, Philippians 2:1-11

     b) Spend at least 5 minutes in prayer asking God to reveal these passages to you in a fresh manner. (You may need to read them again!)

     c) Ask God to forgive you for any part of Jesus' sacrifice you've taken for granted

     d) Be thankful for the grace given to you through Jesus Christ

Music
Listen to this playlist of worship.

Mention
Faith in Jesus Christ is not meant to be secret. The Apostle Paul described Christians as "ambassadors for Christ". Look at what he said for yourself - 2 Corinthians 5:16-21. Ask God for at least one opportunity this weekend to mention the good news of Jesus to someone you know (friend, neighbor, co-worker, etc.). Share, or re-share, your story of faith to people within your family - parents, siblings, and/or children.

May the peace and power of God shape our soul as we grow this weekend. ...all for the glory of Jesus Christ.

Making Disciples - The Mission of the Church

I have been a Christian for much of my life. Yet, making disciples was never taught as being a primary responsibility of believers. Last night, we dedicated a worship service to this commission of Jesus. You can watch the message  here.

Here are 5 resources about making disciples:

1. Multiply Movement - Francis Chan and David Platt have teamed up to help the church grow in faith and application. The resources on this site are easy to navigate and effective in showing us where to start.

2. Life with Mission vs. Life on Mission - Caesar Kalinowski shares the secret to living a life on mission and discipleship. This video is only 2 minutes long, but it is very helpful. For more great resources, check out Verge Network.

3. Disciplemaking: the Heart of it All - Jeff Vanderstelt shares how we already know how to make disciples, but we aren't intentional in applying it in pointing people to Jesus.

4. On Mission with Your Children - In this article, John Murchison says, "To be on mission, families don't need a shift in activity, but a shift in identity". It is important for Christian families to model faith at home throughout all family-stages so that the gospel is branded on children's hearts.

5. Ordinary People - This is a series of 29 videos including videos on being missional as a mom, parent, single, older adult, etc.  In this example, Josh Boyt shares what he has learned as an entrepreneur, seeking to develop businesses that unlock the resources of the world for the good of the Kingdom.

New Perspectives, New Seasons, New Priorities

It's funny how life can so easily enter into a new season. Before you know it, months have past by! That's how I feel today as I sit writing this blog. I've realized that we not only have we entered new seasons of life (planting a church, helping others plant churches, starting new mission initiatives in the Dominican Republic, raising pre-teen daughters while potty-training our 3-year-old, entering our 14th year of marriage, etc.), but we're also entering a new season of spiritual development.

I used to think ministry could be compartmentalized into a neat box. I'd think to myself, "if x leads to y result, then that will be true across every sphere of ministry". I used to be so focused on making programming better that life outside the church was an after-thought at best. But, priorities have shifted - BIG TIME!!! The church modeled after the New Testament doesn't revolve around attractional programming, religious routines, or even denominational ties.

Here's what I mean...

Since my last post on this blog, we planted a church about one mile from our home in Gibsonia, PA. There were a handful of people who partnered with us early on from previous churches, previous small groups, or previous encounters over the past decade. The common thread was a prevailing desire to be surrendered to the mission of God as "missionaries" within our context of everyday life. We didn't believe we needed to move away from the U.S., learn a new language, learn a new culture, etc. in order to live out the Great Commission of Jesus Christ. Instead, we believed God was leading us to stay where we already knew the language, knew the culture, knew the community, and knew God had a greater plan for us and our communities.

Those 6 households have now grown to 40 households in a matter of only fourteen months. Believers and unbelievers have entered this journey with us. Their stories are indescribable! There have been two weddings (another one will occur in March), and now 3 babies are on the way. It's unbelievable to see God working in the lives of these people via: worship gatherings where the Triune God is revealed and exalted through His Word; Community Groups where people are growing relationally and spiritually; Bible Studies where an estimated 20 people meet at restaurants throughout our region for breakfast (early in the mornings) to learn and be challenged to obey the voice of God. It's remarkable!

BUT, all this isn't happening through a method described at flashy conferences or popular books on church growth (not that these things are at all bad). It hasn't happened by purchasing a great facility. Rather, it's through a simple conviction of trusting the Holy Spirit to do what only He can do - change people from the inside out. Our priorities have to be His priorities since its His church. We are experiencing the greatness of God in ways only He can fashion. People are hungry for truth declared in a grace-filled manner. Isn't that what Jesus did (John 1:14)?

When Advance Community Church held its "grand opening" on September 21, 2014 @ 5:00pm, we knew we weren't looking for numeric growth where people only showed up on Sundays for an experience. As a missional church, we prayed for God to bring people who needed to hear the Gospel (because they were walking in darkness and needed to respond to the message of Jesus) and people who were desperate for a Christian life that transcended "church as usual" (because although they may have been saved by God, they lacked equipping in how to live for Kingdom purposes - Matthew 28:18-20, Philippians 3:12-21, Ephesians 4:11-16). Therefore, after a few weeks of vision-casting, we focused on the first 8 chapters of Romans where Paul lays out the Gospel in a clear and logical progression. That series was such a powerful glimpse into the mind and heart of God in how He loves His people.

Now, we are in the midst of a "practical response" to the Gospel as we are focusing on Ephesians 4-6 in a series called, "Resolutions". The central thrust of the series could be summed up by stating: "the Holy Spirit empowers Christians to actually change and live for the glory of God and His Kingdom while on Earth". The Apostle Paul argues the Holy Spirit works through godly friends, in our minds, in our marriages, within our homes, while at work, and throughout the spiritual realms. Amazing!

If you want to get a taste of where we've been in our worship gatherings, watch here.

John Piper's famous quote sums up how I feel during this season of so many priority shifts, "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him". May our lives be deeply marked by the satisfaction only He can give regardless of the season in which we find ourselves. Make space for holiness within the spirit of your mind for God's Spirit to bring about true change (Ephesians 4:23).
